Protecting Your Business from AI Fraud

AI
Artificial Intelligence is Changing Business Risk

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how UK businesses operate—but it also introduces new fraud risks such as deepfakes, phishing schemes, and impersonation scams.

Deepfakes

These are AI-generated videos, audio, or images that mimic real individuals. Criminals can use them to impersonate executives, tricking staff into transferring funds or revealing confidential data.

How Big Is Fraud in Commercial Insurance?

Commercial fraud is rising. A recent review by RSA highlighted that in 2023 the ABI’s industry-wide data showed 84,400 fraudulent claims valued at £1.1 billion, with fraud affecting both personal and commercial lines. While the figures include personal fraud, business insurance is increasingly targeted, with cases like ghost broking, exaggerated commercial liability, and staged property claims. Commercial fraud is similar to personal tactics but tend to be more complex and with higher claim values.

AI tools are making it easier for fraudsters to create realistic fake documents, voices, or videos to support false claims. A Swiss Re Institute report from June 2025 explains how deepfakes and digital disinformation are escalating fraud risk across industrial lines, particularly in motor and casualty insurance.

Zurich UK, for instance, reported detecting nearly £95 million in suspect claims in 2023, with many involving manipulated media referred to as “shallowfakes” or full deepfakes—calling these “emerging threats from a counter-fraud perspective.”

Why Independent Brokers Matter

An independent business insurance broker like Insurance Experts plays a key role in supporting businesses to reduce this risk. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) estimates that brokers place 94% of all commercial insurance premiums in the UK, handling nearly the entire market outside of retail lines. At Insurance Experts we can access specialist insurers and design cover for risks such as AI-driven fraud beyond standard online website offering.

Our team helps to ensure your policies reflect commercial exposures, including emerging AI-enabled fraud, rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
