Like many in the insurance world, Gary Alexander’s entry into the industry was an unexpected turn, but one he has no regrets about. Originally, a career in the Army was the intended path, stemming from a long family military background. However, his girlfriend’s understandable concerns about life as an Army wife, particularly in Northern Ireland, led to a pivotal change in direction.
From “The Risk Business” to Branch Management
Attracted by careers literature publicising “The Risk Business,” Gary joined Guardian Royal Exchange in London’s West End. Two years of comprehensive training across various departments followed, culminating in a focusing on Accident insurance, now known as Commercial Combined. During a period away, Gary indulged his “Army bug,” working within a Royal Artillery battery’s Command Post and flying in Puma and Chinook helicopters. A return to insurance led to a role with AIG in the City, where several years were spent managing a branch network.
Specialising in Entertainment and Events
A new and exciting opportunity then arose to join the company’s fledgling Entertainment Division, focusing on insuring films, festivals, music, and similar ventures – an enjoyable period. This unique experience naturally led to working within the prestigious Lloyds market, and in 2003, the entrepreneurial spirit took hold, leading to the establishment of an independent events insurance broking business Beech Tree Entertainment.
Guiding Clients and Finding Solutions
This venture proved highly successful, eventually leading to Gary and the business joining Insurance Experts as their dedicated events insurance expert. This move brought with it many years of invaluable experience in underwriting risks for a diverse range of insurers. Gary thrives on finding solutions to complex problems and providing expert advice. The satisfaction of guiding clients through difficult issues, coupled with their loyalty and appreciation, makes this work incredibly rewarding.
Beyond Insurance: Gary’s interests
Outside of his role as an Event Insurance Expert, Gary Alexander leads a rich and varied life. He’s an avid music fan, enjoying gigs by timeless bands and singers, and has even dipped his toes into acting with small film roles. A keen traveller, Gary seeks out “out of the way” destinations like Nepal, Peru, and Tanzania. Beyond leisure, he dedicates significant time as an Advisor (and former Trustee) to a Forces Charity, providing crucial support to military veterans grappling with PTSD. This demanding work, particularly during the Covid crisis, involved extensive collaboration with Government and the NHS, culminating in team recognition with MBEs and Queen’s Awards. Recently married, Gary and his wife are now looking forward to further travel, their garden, moving house, and finding more time to relax.
