When things have not gone to plan in your business and you need to make an insurance claim, the last thing you need is added stress – which is why we are here to share a few tips on how you can help the process progress as smoothly as possible.

  1. Call your insurer at the soonest opportunity – the sooner you can tell your insurance provider about your potential claim, the sooner you can find out what you need to do to get the best result from a claim.

  1. Be aware that you have a limited time to report a claim – even if you think that contacting your insurance provider immediately is unnecessary, your policy will in fact contain information on a time limit. Pass it, and you might not be able to claim at all.

  1. Document the evidence – take photos and compile notes on any evidence of damage, forced entry, or anything that could be an essential factor in a claim.

  1. Don’t dispose of damaged items – wait until your insurer has said that it is okay to do so. The damaged goods could be needed to verify value of replacement by the insurance company or an independent loss adjustor negotiating your claim.

  1. Call your insurance broker before you call tradespeople – this is so you can be clear about who will pay for what, and under which terms, if glaziers, builders, electricians, plumbers etc. are required to rectify damage associated with the claim.

  1. Work with your insurer, not against them – working constructively with the professionals involved in your insurance claim, and going through the right official channels will help bring the claim to a close swiftly – minimising overall stress!
